Monitoring your Swift cluster health

OpenStack Swift is an object storage solution with a focus on availability, even if parts of the cluster are not accessible. There are a bunch of mechanisms inside Swift to protect stored data and ensure a high availability.

However, this comes not for free. Swift itself assumes that there will be failures and tries to recover from these as best as it can. But it is still required to monitor your Swift cluster to ensure long-term data protection as well as sufficient performance.

The session will start with a short summary about Swift and its components to get some background on aspects to monitor and required operations in case something breaks.

Afterwards we will have a look into collecting metrics from Swift using statsd and graphite and how to setup your own graphite instance to collect these metrics. Of course we will also have a look into some basic operations in graphite to make the collected metrics useful to you and to detect possible performance impacts early on.
