Adobe is the global leader in digital marketing and digital media solutions. Adobe has large development and quality engineering teams that have been demanding agile, developer friendly APIs to consume infrastructure.

When Adobe's Compute Platform Team began designing their next-generation private cloud stack, the choice of cloud management layer came rather easily.

This new private cloud stack was developed from the ground up taking into account standardization, automation and self-service as well as the ability to scale on network, compute and storage independently from each other. This lofty goal could not be reached just using one technology, but instead required a union of several technologies, many of which have roots in the Openstack world.

A requirement set out by the business not just to build a cloud to support "platform 3.0" applications, but also to elegantly support "platform 2.0/2.5" applications -- applications that require high levels of infrastructure resiliency. For this reason, the team selected VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO). This allows the team to support applications of varying maturity, as well as to plan for the future when such infrastructure resiliancy will no longer be required.

In this session we will discuss all of the different technologies used to build our new private cloud stack.

Specifically, we'll cover networking with NSX and Cumulus Linux, vSphere for compute, vSAN for storage and finally OpenStack as the layer that provides a unified way of consuming these resources in a programmatic manner.We will deep dive into the benefits of each of these technologies and the limits that we have found as we roll this out at scale.

Specific topics include:

* Large scale, geographically distributed compute

* Application diversity

* Why we chose to develop a new platform (limitations of the old)

* The power of Openstack -- our perspective

* VMware - Why bother keeping it around?

* Focus on networking

* IaaS with VIO

* Areas for future development (e.g. standing up entire applications with Heat)
