In private cloud responsibilities are shared between cloud operator and cloud customers. There is a desire in the organization to control and secure images in centralized manner and at the same time custom images are needed for agility and efficient operations. Maintaining custom images is big overhead for developers and operators and it’s also big security risk. When new vulnerabilities are discovered - all systems and images need to be scanned and patched. 

 

In this talk, we want to share how Symantec addresses these governance challenges, including following key topics:

  • Different types of images with clear ownership and responsibilities

  • Role-based access control

  • Vulnerability and patch management

  • Managing images as code with reviews and continuous integration

  • Capacity management for images and snapshots

  • Configuration management

Richard recently joined The Symantec Cloudfire team. Prior to that he was at Google for 10 years, where he built tools, processes and a small team for the Production system image. After that, he worked on the Borg job orchestration system, before moving to Symantec.
