If You Build it, Will They Come? Using OpenStack Swift to Build a Large-scale Archive

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Scientific Computing Director, Dirk Petersen with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute(FHCRI) will dive deep into archives in an OpenStack Swift environment and walk through how they got their users to convert to using an object-based workflow for archive data. FHCRI has deployed a multi-petabyte storage-as-a-service based on OpenStack Swift in use by hundreds of researchers.

In this talk Dirk will cover the tools and steps to get everyday users accessing data with the native Swift API. Including

1) How to identify appropriate workloads.

2) How to use Swift ‘pseudo directories’ with desktop (Windows / OSX) and linux tools to transition from a traditional file system.

3) Why using the native Swift API can improve performance and simplify workflows.

4) How to create the right “carrots” for using the right storage policy (tier) for the right job and how to do internal charge-back.
